On March 28, 2000, an F3 tornado ravaged parts of Fort Worth, Texas—the city I was born and raised in. The only remnant of the event is in a busy downtown intersection: tornado-bent steel beams in front of a mural along a USPS office.
I would pass by this monument nearly every day growing up, always fascinated by how a natural disaster could leave behind such an unexpectedly ethereal sight. My creative process for the Canes content was inspired by this monument and being in the eye of a hurricane.
To bring this vision to life, I created concepts that reflect a juxtaposition between serenity and chaos. A clash between dark and light visuals is present, along with blurs and grainy textures that symbolize wind, debris, and rain. Influences of surrealism and Gen X soft club aesthetics not only intend to be unique but also aim to evoke tension and introspection, much like feeling the “calm before the storm.” Subtle visual metaphors and touches of Hurricanes Red are also present in the concepts.
